Portrait Art by Michael Vasquez
Michael Vasquez is an accomplished Latino American artist who draws on his past to create stunning portraits of youth. His work focuses on young people in gangs. Michael’s work is unflinching, but also respectful and extremely compassionate. His portraits present young people in ways that are not exploitative or focusing on the outward aspects of gang life – instead he is able to show the lives of these young men as individuals. So often art focuses on women as objects of beauty. Instead Michael Vasquez’s art represents young men in ways that are moving and affirming of them as individuals. Recently featured at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. along with six other Latino artists, Michael also lectures across the country and his work has been shown internationally.
