Adrian Streich - Zinzikon school, Winterthur 2015. To deal with...

Standard

Adrian StreichZinzikon school, Winterthur 2015. To deal with the contrast of the relatively low-scale, residential neighborhood and large volume required by the school, the building is broken up into four separate classroom wings. These wings spiral around a central gymnasium, which creates a nucleus of shared activity filled with windows, ensuring visual connections across the space. This movement also helps break the scale of the structure down from the street, as the entirety of the building is never fully visible from a pedestrian perspective. The interstitial areas formed house all of the circulation and fire-stairs, ensuring that the classrooms are compact and efficient. The subtlety executed, yet complex concrete structural system necessitated by the design is most evident in these areas as well. Photos © Roland Bernath.
