Willard Suitcases is a photo series by Jon Crispin that explores the rarely documented visual history and personal stories of former residents of the Willard Psychiatric Center in Willard, NY. The asylum was established in 1869 and went on to accept and house patients for the next 126 years.
In 1995, when its doors finally closed, a Willard employee was put in charge of going through the building and determining what would be discarded and what should be salvaged. In the process, over 400 suitcases suitcases were discovered, locked in the attic. They were suitcases filled with the past lives of former patients who entered sometime between 1910 and 1960. Their suitcases were collected upon admittance and since many of them spent their rest of their lives in the psychiatric center, they remained in storage.
