I think he probably wanted the film to be successful but from what I’ve read it seems like both he and the studio were worried the film would be a failure. The original Star Wars opened in fewer then 34 theatres and Lucas actually went to Hawaii when it was released so he wouldn’t hear about how badly it did. Also the concept of the “blockbuster” didn’t really exists at the time like it does right now.
