archaicwonder: Royal Canopic Jar, Reign of Akhenaten, Dynasty...

Standard

archaicwonder:

Royal Canopic Jar, Reign of Akhenaten, Dynasty 18, Amarna Period, 1352-1336 BC

From the Valley of the Kings, Tomb KV 55.

The woman depicted on the jar’s lid has been tentatively identified as Tiye, Akhenaten’s mother, but the jar itself seems to have belonged to someone else (see video).

There are traces of reworking on her collar and on the innermost band of her wig. During the Amarna period, princesses and queens wore wigs inspired by those of Nubian mercenary soldiers. The short, layered hairstyle wouldn’t be out of place today. A royal uraeus—a rearing cobra that served as a protective symbol—would have been attached to the round hole in the front of her wig. Traces of the snake’s tail are visible on the top of her head.
