Sølve Sundsbø and the Mutable Modus Operandi
Given the state of his rather eclectic portfolio today, it may be hard to believe, but Sølve Sundsbø attributes his early photography inspirations to Swedish ski photographers of the 80’s. “I was skiing a lot and there were some fantastic photographers that produced some really beautiful, poetic images. Photographers like Felix St. Clair-Renard and Mats Gustafson. That was when I was around 14-15. I got into photography through that, and then the path on from there was a bit more complicated. Then there was the classic photographers like [Harry] Callahan, but first it was the Swedish ski photographers that inspired me right from the start.”
His own work in the world of fashion combines the use of 3D scanning, x-rays, hand-painted retouching and surprisingly, some more traditional techniques, like using moving lights to create light trails. He seems to take great pride in his ability to fuse modern methods of photography with conventional ones. “We just did a Prada Speciale shoot for Italian Vogue, mixing old-school photography and 3D scanning, where 90 percent of it is photography. What I like about that is that the photography style is quite old fashioned with a grey background, very simple hair, simple make up and really simple clothes, then you have these things that aren’t real, which make it all extremely modern — but it still almost looks like it’s part of the old photograph. I love things like that.”
You’ll find that his photographs are just as varied as the methods he uses to create them; a fact that nearly ended his career before it began. “People would say to me, ‘I’m not sure I can hire you, I’m not sure what you’re doing. What is your style?’ I was mortified and thought I was never going to make a living as a photographer.”
Consistency, perhaps, is just not for him. This seems to be working in his favor, as his résumé includes editorial work in Vogue Italia, Harper’s Bazaar, POP, W Magazine, Vogue China and i-D; as well as commercial campaigns for the likes of Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Mugler, Cartier and Gucci. In his own words, Sundsbø says, “If I’ve got a style, it’s that I’ve got no style.“
