Josh Oakley is a Seattle-based designer/illustrator who started weather control in 2008 after working for a couple years designing stuff for the action sports industry.
The name “weather control” served a few purposes at the time: Josh had only ever worked for studios with wacky names, and assuming he would be working more on stuff like snowboards, it made sense from that angle, too. The bigger reason was that he had an eye towards creating generative, code-based work that seemed to be formed by natural processes, using tools and methods that were not solely reliant on Adobe’s products.
Fast-forward 7 years and lots of other stuff — some interesting, some just for money — got in the way, but Josh is finally starting to create non-client work under the weather control banner, stuff that fits the initial goal of using algorithmic processes to create life-like systems.
