Southern Californian William Claxton (1927-2008) began capturing the California jazz scene in the early 1950′s, documenting the lives of some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians. His photographs, which provide a soulful window into all facets of the world of jazz, “capture the nuances of the intimacy between jazz musicians and their music” (Chronicle Books on Claxton’s publication Jazz). “Photography,” as Claxton said, “is jazz for the eyes.”
“First, and most important, I love their music. But I am also fascinated by the diverse qualities they possess. They have ingenuousness, a sort of open, innocent attitude. Yet at the same time they display a strong discipline in their dedication to their craft. And I also admire their individualism: Their difference in character and their musical expression.”
