Wild Abstract Aerial photographs of Iceland by Emmanuel Coupe-Kalomiris

These abstract photographs may look like paintings, or views through a microscope. But Emmanuel Coupe-Kalomiris’s photos show the details of uninhabitable Iceland from the air.“Iceland in particular was a place that has been of interest to me for a long time,” Coupe-Kalomiris told weather.com. “I noticed that Iceland is filled with airstrips which facilitate long flights on small planes.”As an Athens-based landscape photographer, Coupe-Kalomiris usually takes his pictures from the ground. But he was inspired by the abstract qualities of land seen from above. Many of the photos lack points of reference, such as buildings or roads. The deliberate avoidance of these structures adds to the abstract nature of the images. It is hard to determine the scale of patterns depicted in the images.
